The Tricks of the Trade: Survival Kit for the Job Market
Practical advice from a UCSB alumnus about how to handle the obstacles and pressures a graduate student faces when entering the academic job market. I will comment on several stages of this intimidating process (job applications, preparing for an initial interview, the campus visit, and contract negotiations). Although the presentation falls within the “how-to” genre, no magic recipes or formulas will be provided. Those are no guarantee of success, as they do not work for everyone, no matter what the vast literature about this says. Instead, the presentation will focus on the importance of recognizing that each path is unique and on exemplifying with my own experience.
