M.A. / Ph.D., Sorbonne University I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where I teach courses on modern and contemporary Iberian cultures, literatures, and visual media. Recent offerings include Soccer in the Hispanic World, Almodóvar’s Spain, Barcelona: Images of a City, Everyday Life in Franco’s Spain, and Food Culture and Politics in Spain. Before joining UCSB, I held teaching and research positions at Harvard University and the University of Barcelona. My work has been widely published in leading academic journals and collective volumes, contributing to ongoing debates on cultural production and politics within the Iberian world. My most recent book, La trama mortal. Pere Gimferrer y la política de la literatura (1962–1985) [The Mortal Plot: Pere Gimferrer and the Politics of Literature] (Renacimiento, 2020), presents the first in-depth analysis of the influential role of Catalan writer, editor, and translator Pere Gimferrer (b. 1945) in reshaping the cultural field in Spain and Catalonia, from the late Franco regime to the democratic transition. My current project, Food Culture and Political Ideologies in 20th-Century Catalonia, examines how culinary practices and discourses played a critical role in representing and shaping the Catalan national imaginary. I welcome inquiries from prospective graduate students interested in any of my fields of specialization.
